Attention to Detail
The benefits in efficiency and power density that switching amplifiers (also known as class D or PWM) have over conventional linear amplifier are well known. Equally recognised is the detrimental effect on sound quality that such approaches can bring. Linea's aim was to develop amplifiers based on switching technology but without sonic compromise and, just as importantly, at a price that will allow this technology to percolate to areas of application that are currently not addressed.
To achieve this a 'back to basics' approach was taken. Rather than applying sticking plaster to existing designs or endeavouring to invent new concepts, effort was concentrated on identifying and eliminating the problems associated with well known topologies and optimising these arrangements to take advantage of modern state of the art power semiconductors. In other words, apply good, honest, solid engineering principles.
The resulting designs make maximum use of the limited negative feedback inherently available in switching designs to provide clean, fast amplification that can take on the best of the best during independent blind listening tests.
