Five-Kilowatts of Precision Rackmount Power

Linea Research have now launched their first rack-mount power amplifier, the XiB4. With four channels of Linea class D amplification, DSP and networked control, XiB4 sets a new standard in flexibility, features, power density and economy.
Housed in a robust steel 2U 350mm (14") deep enclosure and sporting a heavy duty milled aluminium front panel, this latest product from Linea Research builds on a proven engineering philosophy, and delivers 1250W into 2 Ohms on each of its four channels, or 2 X 2500W bridged into 4 Ohms.
With its built in USB interface XiB4 is perfect on its own, but as it also comes complete with BvNet networking as standard, it extends and complements Linea's range of networked active speaker power modules. This unique holistic approach allows passive and self-powered speakers to be elegantly combined on one control platform to suit performance, budget and operational needs.
Like other Linea products, XiB4 uses the PodWare PC software application that is in daily use by thousands of sound engineers and is supported by over twenty pro audio brands for the control and monitoring of their systems. In addition, XiB4 has comprehensive internal monitoring and logging systems which make sure the amplifiers, drivers and protection systems are performing optimally. These systems also record any abuse that may be suffered so that incidents can later be investigated.
XiB allows extensive customisation of the signal processing whilst keeping OEM settings secure against viewing or tampering. This still leaves plenty of signal processing power for the installer and user to utilise. There are no controls on the front panel to confuse the user, or get in harm’s way; the product is completely secure.
The feature set is rounded off by genuine Neutrik connectors, automatic instant-recovery power-save, contact closure preset selection, and optional recyclable open cell fan filters. Over-designed and quiet, the multi-speed fan system keeps things nice and cool. Internally XiB4 is comprised of two independent two-channel amplifier / power supply modules for easy and quick servicing. The firmware is built on a solid proven base, but is in any case easy to update in the field via PodWare over the network.
Linea have put a lot of effort into merging mechanical requirements with industrial design to produce a rugged product that performs well, is easy to install and looks the part. As examples of the attention to detail, both the top and bottom surfaces are free of the screws that often cause damage to other units in a rack and the optional rear rack support kit still allows XiB4 to be removed from the front without rear access or special tools.
In an up-beat mood, Linea’s Davey Smalley commented “We are very excited about this product. All of our beta testers are raving about its sound quality, and the power you can get out of this tiny lightweight box is amazing – it just doesn’t seem right! Add to that all the signal processing, protection, monitoring and networking, and I am confident we have a winner”.
